Team Bridges The Gap

From The Sentinel - 20 April 2007:

Civic leaders have come together to officially open a new bridge over a busy main road. The new Chatterley Whitfield Bridge - which carries cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders over the A527 Biddulph Road on the Whitfield Greenway - was opened at a ceremony yesterday.

The bridge is an innovative design consisting of a central deck hung by stainless steel cables from two arches.

It was designed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council's structural engineering team and built by Bishop Steel Fabrications.

The 64-tonne bridge is 50m long, 3.5m wide and stands 6m above the road surface. It replaces a rail bridge that was demolished in 1970.

The Whitfield Greenway forms part of National Cycling Network route 55 from Central Forest Park in Hanley to Preston.

The city council aims to double the number of cyclists in the city.
