External Work

The second part of implementing the Masterplan will be to reshape the tip and improve the open space around the colliery. This work is known as Phas 1B. The work will:

• allow the diversion of the culvert currently running under the tip into a new stream running around the tip
• link up the cycle paths as part of Sustrans national cycle network
• create the possibility for reed beds to purify water from the site
• improve planting and habitats for wildlife

Local residents were given the opportunity to comment on the proposals in 2004.

Funding for the work will come from English Partnerships. This was announced in August 2005, but work is not likely to start on site for several years.
